Back

A VR training tool for nursing schools and caregivers that simulates the sensory and cognitive challenges of dementia to build deep empathy and reduce burnout (developed for Lived Experiences LLC).

Challenge

Traditional classroom education teaches the symptoms of dementia but fails to convey the emotional reality. This disconnect leads to caregiver frustration, burnout, and the misinterpretation of patient behavior as stubbornness rather than symptoms of a disease.

Approach

We utilized "Embodied Empathy" technology co-designed with practitioners and researchers. The VR headset hijacks the user's senses to simulate the disease's progression, forcing the user to navigate everyday tasks while battling simulated cognitive decline.

Features

• First-person VR experience of dementia symptoms

• Sensory distortions mimicking visual and auditory confusion

• Scenario-driven storytelling grounded in real caregiving situations

• Designed for nursing schools, medical colleges, and caregiver organizations

• Flexible use in classes, workshops, and professional training programs

Timeline

From discovery to measurable outcomes

Discovery

Hospital leadership identified the training gap and defined success metrics with our team.

Design

We conducted cognitive task analysis and designed the simulation architecture around measurable learning objectives.

Build

Our developers created the environment in Unity while researchers integrated biometric tracking systems.

Validate

Multiple cohorts trained in the simulation. We collected performance data and compared outcomes to traditional methods.

Deploy

The hospital integrated the simulation into their residency program with ongoing data collection and refinement.
